Activities
Social events
We hold a wide range of social events for all ages, from adult learning opportunities to relaxed quizzes, a book club, musical evenings and informal youth events. We also hold a fortnightly social centre for senior members of our community.
To help members to find and organise events close to where they live and to get in touch with other members who live near to them, we have informal area-based events including the BR Group (Bromley, Shortlands Beckenham), BR5&6 (Orpington, Petts Wood), SE10 and Beyond (Greenwich, Blackheath) and Beyond the M25 (most of Kent). However, the groups’ events are not exclusive – they are advertised and open to all.
The best source of details on upcoming events is the weekly e-newsletter (e-Light). Subscribe to the mailing list via the Newsletter tab.
Youth
Activities are led by community members, sometimes with the help of professional youth leaders, and feed into the wider Progressive Movement youth programme. They include nights out, sleepovers, trips and residential holidays (subsidies are available) as well as just getting together with people of the same age to have fun.
Caring Community
The Caring Community is led by a committee drawn from various synagogue groups, all of whom have undergone the necessary police checks and GDPR study and training. Its activities fall largely under the following headings:
Pastoral
We are always looking for ways to help and support members. We phone those who prefer this means of contact, visit in person and meet virtually though Zoom. Some members of the synagogue undertake visits to members who are unwell or bereaved.
Social Centre
The Social Centre meets on the second and fourth Wednesdays of each month, supported by a talented, cheerful and dedicated band of volunteers who prepare and serve an excellent lunch, tea and coffee. We also offer board games, lively discussion and physical exercises with a professional osteopath. There is often a special activity such as musical entertainment or a talk by a speaker from an organisation, local and national, providing services for older people. As many members depend on lifts or taxis to attend the centre, a transport fund exists to help with costs.
Knit, Stitch and Natter
We knit cardigans and traffic light hats (to help staff to track each baby’s developmental progress) for the Intensive Neonatal Care Unit at King’s College Hospital as well as items for St Christopher’s Hospice.
Other groups
We attend Jewish Care’s South London Forum, where different topics are presented and discussed at each meeting, as well as meetings of Bromley Council and Age UK. We are represented at Transport for London. We are always pleased to hear from other relevant groups. Do contact us through the synagogue office.
