From Pythagoras to Pi

An Illustrated History of Computation

Professor Bernie Cohen

With a degree in Natural Philosophy and Computer Programming, Bernie Cohen worked for 18 years as a telecom systems engineer before moving into academia first at Surrey University, then as Professor of Computing at London City University, retiring as Emeritus Professor in 2003. He teaches and publishes on the theory, philosophy, history and socio-economics of computation.

In this talk, illustrated by a selection of his ever-growing collection of discarded computing equipment, mechanical and electronic, he introduces many of the fascinating people who have contributed over the past two millennia to the now ubiquitous computer and the mathematics of computation. He has delivered the speech twice to the National Museum of Computing, Bletchley Park and to many U3A groups in Surrey, adapting his talk in response to audience reactions and technological developments.  He is always willing to give a home to your unwanted junk!

There will be a short Friday Evening Service at 7p.m.

The talk will begin at 7.30pm with a break half way through for refreshments.
