Robert Symonds

How do you like to be known?
Bob

Where do you live?
Bromley

What are your interests and hobbies?
Reading the Guardian, concerts, theatre, photography, the countryside.

What is the nature of your current or previous employment?
I began as a town planning researcher in local, then central, government until the public service was demonised by Margaret Thatcher, so switched to full-time freelance translating, working from home (I had previously translated part-time in the evenings).

Do you have any skills or interests which you would be interested in participating in with other members?
If any members have a Dutch or Italian connection, but do not speak Dutch or Italian, I would be happy to help them with their correspondence.

Who are your family members?
My wife, Sylvia, is unfortunately in a nursing home, where she would welcome the occasional visitor. Our son, Mark, has lived in Edinburgh for nearly twenty years. His ambition from the age of 9, after a first visit, was “to be a Scotsman”.

Is there any other information you would like to share with members?
As editor of Highlight, I am always pleased to receive original contributions from members, preferably about their own experiences and with a Jewish slant, but no politics please.

This member profile originally appeared in Highlight, the monthly newsletter of Bromley Reform Synagogue, in July 2008.  It was correct at the time of going to print.
