Linda & Matthew

Matthew writes: We live in Blackheath and joined the shul around 20 years ago, when the eldest of our four sons became eligible for cheder. Since then we have repeatedly failed to say “no” when asked to get involved and have between us held most of the official posts such as Chairman and Cheder Head Teacher and many unofficial ones, such as Head Gardener!

My favourite activity is probably teaching bar and bat mitzvah children their portions. On a personal level I am a business consultant specialising in organisational and behavioural change. I am also Chairman of a drama-based training company. Linda is a National Childbirth Trust teacher (for which she is remarkably well suited both by aptitude and experience!).

When we are not dancing attendance on our youngest (5 year-old Benjamin) or on synagogue business, I like to play tennis, go walking and support Charlton Athletic (well somebody’s got to!). Linda’s hobbies (apart from chocolate) include film and yoga. We are both Scrabble nuts and love travel, which we have happily been able to do lots of - particularly loving India.

Apart from Benjamin, we have three sons: David, who went to Sheffield University, has done some amazing travel (particularly going overland to the far east) and has developed an expertise in making carnival masks following a stint working in Venice; Samuel has just graduated from Brighton University, where he got a first in Sociology and Orlando who has just finished his second year at Cambridge, where he is studying Natural Sciences and is working this summer on the Millennium Seed project for Kew Gardens ( a ‘Noah’s Ark’ project to store the seeds of every known plant).
