Ann Fried

My name is Ann Fried. I was born in Ramsgate in Kent and, apart from working for a time in the States, have lived in South London all my adult life. I trained as a shorthand typist back in the 60s when the Americans still liked our accents, but now I earn my living as an optical receptionist and “right hand woman” in the family business. A convenient job for a nice Jewish girl!

As a result of an interest in Jewishly educating my own children, I eventually studied at the Leo Baeck College, which led to an MA in Jewish Education. I managed to graduate at the grand old age of 55 years. My other passionate interest is in printmaking.I studied art at St. Martins School of Art and, although it is a hobby these days, I make great use of my home studio to continue to make art when I can.

My husband, Joram, was born in Israel and came to this country in 1956 with his parents. We have three adult sons: Jonathan who lives in Spain with his partner Joanna and our only grandchild, Leo; our middle son, Benjamin and his wife Katie, who are currently living in Malta, and our youngest Alexander and his partner, Sainabou, who live with us.

Chairing the Education Committee of the Synagogue after such a short time as a member means I am still putting names to faces. So if you see me at services, and you think I don’t know you, say something! You may be just the person I’m looking for.
Ann Fried, Chairman of the Education Committee
