Gretel Jordan

Gretel Jordan’s Life, as told to Nadia

I now live in a nursing home in Chislehurst. I was born in Einbeck, Germany and moved to Uelson when Hitler came to power. In 1939. I came to England with the Kindertransport and lived in Cambridge with my sponsors.

In England I trained as a nurse. I lived and worked at various hospitals: the Hillingdon, Central Middlesex, Westminster, Chelsea, the Canada Red Cross Hospital at Taplow, where I became ward sister, then at Stoke Mandeville as administrative sister. During this time I attended a King’s Fund course and won a scholarship to America, where I studied for a year. I also spent a year with my brother in South Africa, where I hated the apartheid system.

I then joined Social Services as advisor in charge of residential homes in Bromley. In 1964 I became matron of Bromley Hospital.

I enjoy listening to other people and, in the past, holidays in Switzerland, and cooking and eating good food. My favourite is still salmon, smoked or fresh.

In Israel I have a nephew, and a niece, who sometimes visits me with her husband, and in South Africa a niece and nephew.

I would like to send good wishes to all my friends at the Synagogue.
