Norman Goldberg

My hobbies:
Grandchildren, bridge, sport, reading, theatre.

Employment:
I was a dentist and worked for six months in an African township before I married. I chaired the Croydon branch of the British Dental Association for two years and served on the Postgraduate Dental Committee before retiring.

Special interests:
I grew up in Apartheid South Africa. I hated the system, but saw little opposition. I was always aware of the fact that my parents were refugees from Lithuania, where Anti-Semitism was rife, and that the Jews were the most abused, kicked-around people in history. All my family who were unable to escape were killed by Hitler and I felt very deeply that a land where Jews could hold their heads up high and feel proud to be Jews, and also feel unthreatened, was absolutely sacrosanct.

The Synagogue has played an important part in my life. I served on Council for many years. I chaired the Youth Committee and was also Senior Warden for a few years. The most satisfying work I ever did for the Synagogue was to run the Conversion Class for ten years. It was satisfying because, when I look around today, I am extremely proud to recognise that “my” converts make a vital contribution to the life of the Synagogue.
