Family Education
Jewish family education encompasses four goals. Parental involvement in Jewish learning is very important and we believe that children often benefit from learning together with their parents. Family Education provides quality family time together and it allows family members to enjoy one another's company in a Jewish setting. As different families get to know one another they often decide to spend time together; thus the learning programme builds community among families. The ultimate goal of Jewish Family Education is the hardest and most rewarding of all: bringing Jewish living into the home and encouraging a deepening of commitment to the celebration of Shabbat, festival observance and Jewish life. Family events are fun and inclusive and often appear more recreational than educational. Jewish Family Education is about having fun with your family while reinforcing children’s and parents' learning needs.
Young People
Our young people are encouraged to participate in Jewish holiday camps arranged by a variety of organisations, and in Europe tours and gap year schemes organised under the auspices of the Israel Experience. They also have the opportunity to join in local youth activities with Maccabi (on Sunday afternoons, for those aged 5 - 11) and JLGB (on Tuesday evenings for those aged 8 - 12), among others, and with the national Reform youth movement, RSY-Netzer.
Study, talks and courses
We are now running a Jewish Studies GCSE course for both teenagers and adults - classes meet separately, the one for teenagers on Sunday afternoons and those for adults during the week.
Adult Education events comprise regular lectures on a variety of topics, but generally with a Jewish/Israeli link. Our annual Jubilee Lecture attracts a well known speaker and is always well attended.
Friday night Onegei Shabbat take place several times a year and usually take the form of short talks given by members after Friday Evening services, followed by informal discussion.
We run courses on different subjects and generally sessions are arranged to allow them to be stand alone where possible as well as being part of a series of talks.
An essential part of most of our events is partaking of light refreshments, giving attendees an opportunity to chat in a relaxed atmosphere. All events are interactive – either allowing questions at the end of the lecture or encouraging audience participation throughout the session. We endeavour to cover a variety of topics in our programme and hope that the informal atmosphere at our events makes them accessible to those of whatever level of knowledge.
Our Learning Partnership pairs someone who has a specific learning need with another community member who is able to offer one to one assistance with this.
Our community has close links with the local CCJ (Council for Christians and Jews) and the local Three Faiths Forum which gives our members the opportunity to participate in multifaith events and encourages interfaith understanding and tolerance.
Our plans for the future include setting up a local Jewish Film & Book Society and increasing the number of musical events. Suggestions for events are always welcome, as are enthusiastic volunteers who are willing to give a talk on a subject close to their heart. Our main objective is to make our events as inclusive as possible and feedback is greatly appreciated.
If you would like to know more, to suggest a topic for an event, or to offer your services as a speaker or helper, please contact the synagogue office on 020 8460 5460.
